Baggotrath Castle
Here is a bit of interesting history about the wonderful street, Baggot Street, that we are on.
Baggotrath castle, a medieval castle, was situated at present day Baggot Street, Dublin 4. It was built in the late thirteenth century by Sir Robert Bagod, a judge and the first appointed Chief Justice of the Irish Common Pleas. The castle was later passed on to the Fitzwilliam family.
Baggotrath castle was believed to be the strongest fortress near Dublin and was at the centre of many battles in the English Civil War. The castle was ruined on the eve of the Battle of Rathmines, in 1649. Colonel Michael Jones believed that the Irish Royalist leader, James Butler, would seize the castle so he took the precaution of partly destroying it.
The castle remained in ruins until the early 19th century when it was demolished by Dublin corporation to allow the extension of Baggot Street. The site of the castle was on Upper Baggot Street facing Waterloo Road, which is exactly where The Waterloo Bar stands today!
