Fish & Chips

When you think pub food, what is the first dish that comes to mind? For me it would have to be fish & chips!

The first fish & chips in Ireland were sold by an Italian immigrant, Giuseppe Cervi back in the 1880's. He started selling fish & chips outside pubs from a handcart. His wife Palma would ask customers "Uno di questa, uno di quella?" which means "one of this, one of the other", which is where the phrase "one and one" comes from. People still refer to fish & chips as "one and one" in the city.

The fish & chips at The Waterloo is a really popular dish on our menu, and what makes it unique is the fact that it is gluten free. A lot of coeliacs that we have talked to have really missed not being able to eat fish & chips, but we use gluten free flour as well as Green's Glutenfree Ale in our batter, this to the delight of many coeliacs. The batter is very light and crispy, and it comes served with our homemade saffron aioli. So if you are looking for delicious gluten free Fish & Chips, look no further. Pop down to us on Upper Baggot Street and enjoy our very own "one and one"!
